VANITAS 6

A hallucination of death.

VANITAS 6 presents us a larger-than-life face of a beautiful model that occupies two-thirds of the painting. Her hands are in white rubber gloves, surgical gloves perhaps, and they frame her face as she stares absently into the distance with glassy green eyes. One hand holds a shiny metallic object reminiscent of a scalpel or some other instrument used for cutting skin. Four reflecting chrome skulls made of metal float around her head…or perhaps they are in her head, a hallucination of death. Two large splashes of a thick liquid cover much of the picture. The deep red color suggests blood. The scene is a surrealistic dream, a clinical nightmare even. But we cannot turn away from the beauty and the mystery, despite our sense of dread.
